alternate history rome stuff part 1

In this alternate history, there is a modern Roman Empire. However, to make the game easier to play, it is not a continuous empire, but rather, a re-created one.

The exact history of the world is never outlined, and for a good reason. It's no use to get hung up in specifics of alternate history. Only the general historical movements are outlined, while the rest of history, somehow, happens the way it does in our timeline.

The first empire was that of Augustus, and Constantine, the Roman Empire we think of when we think of Rome. It is often called the Italian Empire, as in, "the time the Empire was ruled by Italians", and not as in "The Empire of Italy"

The second empire is that of Justinian, and Maurice, AKA the Byzantine Empire, or Greek Empire. It is only considered a separate empire from the first in hindsight, and until the rule of Phillip the great, was seen as simply a continuation of the first empire.

The third empire was only ever declared in hindsight, hundreds of years after the fact. It is the empire of Charlemagne, and Lothair, and is often known as the French Empire.

The fourth empire is that of Charles, and Phillip the great. Declared retroactively by Phillip, after inheriting both Austria and Spain from his father Charles, this empire was united when Germany, Italy, and Spain joined with England, which Phillip had claims to through his marriage, and invaded France, annexing the country, in 1560. This empire would truly last for only 20 years, starting to break apart with the dutch revolt, and finally being brought to a legal end at the end of the 30 years war, with France, England, Spain, and Austria being split into legally distinct kingdoms once more. This is often known as the German Empire.

The fifth and current empire was created in 1949, after WW2. After the United States decided not to get involved in the war, the UK and USSR were able to win the war, with the USSR occupying most of Europe. The USSR, now controlling all of europe to the Pyrenees, attempted to put communist governments in power in the various nations, and using nationalism to keep them seperate from one another, to prevent them working together against Moscow. This would prove a failure, as Russia was drastically overstretched, and a series of revolts from 1947-1949, explicitly opposing Russian attempts to appeal to Nationalism and impose Communism, ended with the creation of the modern Roman Empire. As most of the revolts had been funded by, and heavily organized by the United Kingdom, many call the current empire the British Empire; that is "the time the Empire was ruled by the British", and not as in "The Empire of Britain"

What has been happening to me over the past 3 weeks

In early 2017, I was listening to a podcast, Cortex. In it they discussed time tracking. I thought that might be a useful thing for me to try. Why? Well sometimes I get heavily addicted to certain things, video games for example, and dump hours upon hours into them, and wanted to know exactly how many hours I was dumping in. I'd just finished one such binge playing Starbound. Sadly, as I'd finished, I don't have the data.

Since I sit in front of my computer all day I thought I'd simply download a program that tracks what I do and for how long I do it. I figured the program would tell me I play on the computer for 16 hours a day. I downloaded a program called ManicTime.

In the end it turns out I spend closer to 14 hours a day in front of the computer. However, sadly, since I never got a strong addiction to any video game outside of Starbound, in 2017, I had none of the data I was looking for.

There was, however, some useful data. For 2 weeks in February I got into Romance of the Three Kingdoms XIII or RTK13. Despite that for both of these weeks google chrome remained my most used app. Another 2 week span in March saw me play the latest Nobunaga's Ambition, but even at the most it only ever tied for Discord as my 2nd most used app. One week in May saw me use Euro Truck Simulator 2 for more than Chrome, and American truck Simulator for more than Discord the following week. RTK13 came back in September to just about tie with Chrome for a week. The largest spike in this time, however, was Minecraft, which took a massive lead over Chrome, but only for a one week period, as, demands of my time in CMHoC (the online political simulation I play) called me away from mining and crafting. Since then my video game time has been quite limited.

However

On the 15th of February, I started playing Hearts of Iron 4.

This is 3 weeks ago.

I wanted to compare the last 3 weeks of data to 3 week chunks preceding it.

Before we go forward note the following.

Chrome, or Google Chrome, is my browser of choice. It is what I use to watch internet videos, post on reddit, make blogposts, and anything else "on the internet" I wish to do. Discord is a chat app, that allows me to chat in the various chat rooms I am in; the one I spend the most time in is the CMHoC discord server which I help run as Speaker (IE Community Manager) of CMHoC. MS Paint, or Paint, is the program I use to make maps; its simple, free, and does everything I need it to; to it I've added Office (spreadsheet) and Notepad, two other tools I use often for making maps and other data crunching. Lastly, among my top 5 programs, there are always two others. One is simply windows explorer; thats what gets recorded when you open a windows folder to look for files, and the other is whatever game I happen to be playing. For the purposes of this, I am separating the game(s) I am addicted to from the game(s) I play regularly. I am adding every game I play, added up, that make the top 10 apps used in a day.

Here are the results:

Something hit me like a ton of bricks while making this.

Times when I'm addicted to a video game I cut my sleep, as well as cutting everything else. It is also quite easy and clear to see when and where addiction is occurring, and that is a useful tool that I can use.

The original plan was for me to make a post explaining to people "hey I'm sorry I've been so absent, here is what happened, here is when it will end naturally" but it turns out that taking drastic action is not only easy but simple. I can actually change my life for the better here with a clear step:

If I've played the same game for more than 6 hours, two days in a row, I apply my "cap". The cap means I can not play the game for more than 6 hours on any day.

This will impact only a small number of days, and only in the middle of an addiction binge, but, it will stop the problems that are seen when a number of days in a row fall to an addicting video game. It will allow me to do the things I need to do and will be healthy for me mentally.

In short: this ends now, as, since I'm capping the time I'm spending playing video games, I will have the time needed to do the things I should actually be doing.

Australia, its that time again

Attention: Australia.

In 2007 you elected a Labor government lead by Kevin Rudd.

Approaching the 2010 election, with Labor polling poorly, you replaced Rudd with the more moderate Julia Gillard. Gillard then won the 2010 election, albeit very narrowly.

Prior to the 2013 election you noticed Gillard was polling poorly and replaced her with Kevin Rudd again.

He went on to lose to Tony Abbott.

Approaching the 2016 election, with the Coalition polling poorly, you replaced Abbott with the more moderate Malcolm Turnbull. Turnbull then won the 2016 election, albeit very narrowly.

Prior to the 2019 election you noticed Turnbull was polling poorly.

ATTENTION AUSTRALIA

It is time to replace him with Abbott so the coalition can lose to Labor and we can repeat this process with Bill Shorten and Anthony Albanese.

3 posts I've made in the past about the US and its "gun" problem

The US has a violence problem.

The US has more non-gun deaths than these countries have gun + non gun deaths.

The US has a violence problem. People think it's okay, or cool, to be violent towards one another for various reasons, many cultural. Getting rid of every gun in the country still means the US has a crazy high rate of murder and violence.

If you want to solve the problem of gun violence, you need to solve the problem of violence. Convince americans that violence is not okay, and you'll see the number of gun deaths drop along with the number of non-gun deaths.

Part 1: http://thenewteddy.blogspot.ca/2016/06/us-and-gun-violence.html

Here are two videos I just watched by Stephen Colbert
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-1VZGUJ8GtY&ab_channel=TheLateShowwithStephenColbert
and
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fhLoBheK-7Y&ab_channel=TheLateShowwithStephenColbert

You don't need to watch them. In the second video there is a part where a famous basketball player says that if someone steps over you, you have an obligation to assault them. Watch if you want the full context, but it matters little.

I remind you of this graphic

If you take away guns from every American, you'll likely cut the total number of homicides in half. And the remaining half will still be far far more than Canada, the next country on the list.

The poorly thought out comment in the second video is a perfect example of this culture. So that it's very clear what I'm saying, I will scream it.

It is not okay to commit violence on another person. If you think it is okay, you are the problem, and removing you will do more for reducing gun violence than removing a gun will.

The US has a violence problem.

http://thenewteddy.blogspot.ca/2016/06/us-and-gun-violence-2.html

When you compare the USA to these other countries, it becomes obvious.

The US has a violence problem.
If you take away their guns, you'll do two thing. First you'll reduce the rate of violence a bit, secondly, you'll increase the amount of knife and car violence.

If you take away their knives and cars you'll increase the rate of hammer violence
And then of axe violence
And then of frying pan violence

If you strip everyone in the world naked, and took away all their things, the amount of fist and foot violence in the US would be off the scale compared to fist and foot violence around the world.

The US has a violence problem.

"How'm I doin?"

(Mayor Ed Koch) rode the New York City Subway and stood at street corners greeting passersby with the slogan "How'm I doin'?"

context: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ed_Koch

If I ask you this it means I want you to tell me how good I am doing at my job.
