Kokaku (Morohito) 1780-1817
Abdicated, died in 1840. Reigned during the first early signs of the failure of the Shogunate.

Ninko (Ayahito) 1817-1846
Reign saw a series of crises that greatly weakened the shogunate.

Komei (Osahito) 1831-1867
Sparked by the 1853 arrival of commodore Perry, made the "Order to Expel Barbarians" in 1863 without first consulting with the Shogun, perhaps the strongest power play by an Emperor against a Shogun since 1333.

Meiji (Mutsuhito) 1867-1912
Fought the Shogunate in the Boshin war, won. Born in 1852 when Japan was isolated and feudal, by the time of his death in 1912, Japan was firmly in the 1st world of developed nations. Sometimes called "The Great"

Taisho (Yoshihito) 1912-1926
Sickly, and suffering from disabilities, his reign allowed for the flourshing of what became known as the Taisho Democracy.

Hirohito (Showa) 1926-1989
Became regent in 1921, lead japan during its early democracy, its military takeover, its war with china and the allies, joining those the allies and rebuilding after the war, the economic and tech boom, and the rise of Japan to become the 2nd largest economy in the world. A figurehead after the war, never really held power the way his grandfather did, even before the war.

Akihito (Heisei) 1989-2019
Abdicated. First purely constitutional Emperor. Many modern events occured during his reign, including the lost decade, the Fukushima crisis, and the blossoming of the modern Internet.

Naruhito (Reiwa) 2019-
Current guy. Brand new. His brother (Fumihito) is his expected successor, followed by his Nephew (Hisahito)
