why 1972?
Well the 1974 election is the first one where they limited constituencies to being continuous. Before this, there are some, notably in Scotland north of Edinburgh, that were all chopped up into bits.
Additionally, Northern Ireland had major changes in 1973, and, at the same time, local government was reformed around the United Kingdom.
